Chennai: In the bustling streets of Tamil Nadu, where the spirit of resilience and progress defines daily life, a new chapter of governance under Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay is quietly transforming promises into tangible realities. Just months into his tenure, the actor-turned-leader’s commitment to women’s safety—a cornerstone of his election campaign—is manifesting in heartening ways that are winning the trust of the people.

During his poll campaign, Vijay passionately vowed to make Tamil Nadu a state where every woman, regardless of the hour, could move freely without fear. He spoke from the heart about safeguarding grandmothers, mothers, sisters, daughters, and girl children, pledging dedicated mechanisms to combat crimes against women and root out underlying issues like substance abuse. True to his word, one of his earliest initiatives after assuming office in May 2026 was the launch of the Singappen Special Task Force (also known as Singappen Athiradi Padai or Women’s Lioness Force).

On June 9, 2026, CM Vijay personally flagged off this specialised all-women police unit at Rajarathinam Stadium in Chennai. Headed by Inspector General of Police K. Bhavaneeswari, the force focuses on preventive policing to tackle offences such as stalking, sexual harassment, repeated harassment, trafficking attempts, and crimes in public places and transport. The government allocated ₹354 crore in the first phase, with plans for 2,500 additional posts in the second phase. Equipped with modern vehicles, advanced technological tools, drones for patrolling, and body cameras, the unit aims for rapid response to distress calls and enhanced surveillance.

A recent viral video circulating on social media beautifully illustrates this shift in action. In the early hours of the morning, around 1 AM, a young woman found herself needing assistance while travelling late at night. Instead of facing uncertainty, she received prompt and professional help from Tamil Nadu Police officers, who escorted her safely all the way home. The woman herself recorded the moment, capturing the officers accompanying her until she reached her doorstep. Far from being a routine duty, the act reflected genuine care and responsiveness enabled by the government’s renewed focus.

The clip has struck a chord across the state and beyond, amassing widespread appreciation. Netizens have flooded comments sections with praise for the police personnel’s professionalism, promptness, and commitment. Many described it as a shining example of community-oriented policing that rebuilds public confidence. “This is what leadership looks like,” one user noted, while others highlighted how such incidents help create an environment where women can pursue their dreams—whether late-night shifts, studies, or personal errands—without hesitation.

Beyond the Singappen Force, Vijay’s administration is implementing a comprehensive women’s safety ecosystem. This includes zero-tolerance policies linked to anti-narcotics drives, increased CCTV coverage at crime-prone and dark spots, improved street lighting, smart panic buttons in public transport, and fast-track special courts for swift justice. Free travel for women on government buses further empowers mobility, while district-level monitoring ensures accountability.

This positive momentum extends beyond one video. Reports of enhanced night patrols and proactive measures are fostering a sense of security that was a key demand during the elections. For a state with vibrant cities and bustling rural landscapes, such steps signal that governance is becoming more empathetic and people-centric.

Thalapathy Vijay’s journey from celluloid hero to Chief Minister has been remarkable, but it is actions like these—rooted in his promise of safety and empowerment—that are defining his rule. As Tamil Nadu embraces this new era, the viral video serves as a powerful reminder: when leaders deliver on their word, society thrives. Women feel empowered, communities grow stronger, and the state moves closer to its potential as a beacon of progress and inclusivity.

In the words of many grateful citizens, this is more than policing—it is a promise kept. With continued focus and public support, Thalapathy Vijay’s Tamil Nadu is poised to set new benchmarks in women’s safety, proving that real change begins with sincere intent and decisive action.
