Senior Congress leader Sushmita Dev joins Trinamool

GUWAHATI : Sushmita Dev, who was the president of the Women’s Wing of the Congress, joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday afternoon, a day after resigning from her party. The TMC made the announcement on social media after Dev came to Kolkata and met TMC national general secretary and Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee and party leader in rajya sabha Derek O’Brien. Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) Assam leader said on Monday afternoon that former Congress MP from Assam Sushmita Dev joined trinamool Congress in the presence of senior leader Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata. The Congress party has once again suffered a major setback.

Former MP and Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev has resigned from the Congress and joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Sushmita Dev joined the TMC on Monday in the presence of TMC leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien. Earlier on August 15, Sushmita had sent her resignation to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. Sushma was holding the responsibility of president of the All India Mahila Congress. Sushmita has been a Congress MP from Silchar in Assam where her father Santosh Mohan Dev once had a strong hold. Since now she has joined the Trinamool Congress. The TMC is eyeing Tripura as well as Assam after winning the West Bengal assembly elections. The Trinamool Congress has offered Assam MLA Akhil Gogoi to lead the party in Assam. Recently, Akhil Gogoi, mla from Sivasagar in Assam and leader of The Kisan Mukti Sangram Samiti, had met TMC supremo and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and called for an alliance against the BJP. Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Monday questioned the congress’ functioning after Sushmita Dev quit the party and said the party is unaware of everything. Sushmita Dev resigned from the primary membership of our party, he tweeted. When we try to strengthen the ‘Bujrang’ (old leader) party, it is also blamed. Sibal claimed that the party is unaware of everything. Congress leader and former MP Sushmita Dev has resigned from the party. Sushmita, who has taken over as the President of the All India Mahila Congress, had sent her resignation to party chief Sonia Gandhi on August 15.

 On Sushmita’s resignation, Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala wished her a bright future and expressed hope that whatever steps the former MP takes will be taken thoughtfully.I tried to talk to Sushmita Dev but her phone was switched off, he told reporters. Sushmita Dev was a hardworking and talented worker. At present, no letter has been received by Sonia Gandhiji. In that case, I hope that whatever decision she takes, she will take it thoughtfully. I wish him a bright future on behalf of the party. In her resignation to Soniya Gandhi, Sushmita did not take any reason to quit the party, though she thanked Sonia Gandhi and the party leadership for her guidance and cooperation as she resigned from the primary membership of the Congress.
